basic uniforms-coveralls?

I had an interesting conversation with an acquaintance who sells repro. HBTs

We got to talking about uniforms issued to troops.

During WWII, all U.S army soldiers received one or more sets of "fatigues". The first pattern HBT's were issued until stocks were exhausted. They were used until the end of the War- it is not difficult to find them in original photographs and newsreels taken during the fighting in Normandy in the summer of 1944.

2nd pattern uniforms were made in both the standard design and with gas flaps. Both variations were made in sage green and od#7.

Both designs and colours were issued concurrently.

Coveralls were not just worn by mechanics and vehicle crews. They were issued to many other units- including the First Special Service Force as a training uniform. What the criteria was to use these rather than the two-piece uniform is unknown. There are two patterns of coveralls- the main difference being in the pocket designs. Both were made in sage green and od#7 color HBT and there was no special meaning to the patterns- they were simply a change in the contract specifications and manufacturers.

Does anyone know if the FSSF wore the coveralls in the field?

Macdaddy,

In the Supercommandos book there is a picture of forcemen wearing the 2nd pattern HBT coveralls in Castelabate, Italy and aswell as Anzio. If you look real closely you can see both variations of the coveralls.
